The word 'Perfume' itself is commonly used to refer to any worn fragrance, though in fact refers to a specicfic type of which there are many other variations.
What is genealogy?
Genealogy is the pedigree of a perfume, similar to that for people and families. When you search for fragrances on the Scent Direct site, you will always have an option to view the genealogy.

Why?
Often fragrances are discontinued and it is just so infuriating to hit a dead end when you are searching for that special fragrance, so by using the genealogy we offer you the ten nearest matches of that fragrance.

If you are stuck deciding on quite which edition to buy, hopefully the information here will help you.

However, if you are still confused, don't worry, just call us and we will be pleased to discuss your specific needs, and offer advice whoever the gift may be for.

Perfume or Parfum
Dilution: 15 - 30%
When to Wear: In small quantities, either at the begining of the day, or for a fuller affect in the evening. Strong enough to last the day.
Perfume/Parfum or extrait, is a concentrated essence of fragrant materials diluted in the minimum possible amount of high-grade alcohol, and is the most luxurious, and expensive, edition available. It is expensive due to the higher percentage of actual fragrance within the mix, and the packaging.

Often the perfume has a much more luxurious and desireable bottle, designed in the past by names including Lalique and Baccarat and are now very collectable. Perfume is generally available in small quantities, often 5 - 15ml and fragrance lasts many times longer after application than other dilutions.

Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, even before people began to decorate themselves, they tried to please each other through the use of fragrance, and it still remains today one of the most precious and desired of all cultural luxuries.
Eau de Parfum (EDP)
Dilution:
8 - 15%
When to wear: Throughout the day in small amounts.
Eau de Parfum (EDP) or Parfum de Toilette (PDT), a lower dilution of fragrance in alcohol, and offered in a different bottle to the Perfume. Eau de Parfum makes a good double-act with EDT, start the day with the EDP and replenish it with the EDT as and when you wish.
Top, Middle and Base Notes;
The genealogy is based upon the olfactory 'notes' of each fragrance,

First - the Top Note, the first odor that it permeates.

Second - the Middle Note after the fragrance has settled in the air and on the skin, and

Third - Base Note the lasting odor of the fragrance, after it has been worn for a while.

Eau de Toilette (EDT)
Dilution: 4 - 8%
When to wear: Throughout the day
Eau de Toilette (EDT) the most widely available version of perfume for women. It is most commonly available as a spray for ease of application, and as it is so light in its' fragrance it can be re-applied throughout the day as a top-up to replenish your fragrance.
